Can you picture a moist, delicate, full of flavor coffee cake that melts in your mouth with buttery goodness? Cherry Streusel Coffee Cake is a recipe from my Great Aunt Mary you will L-O-V-E. She grew up in Kentucky and lived on a farm where they baked and cooked everything, I mean everything! There were no Wal Mart stores or big chain grocery stores to pick up meats and vegetables. There were no fast food restaurants either, therefore they had to get creative and make everything themselves. Aunt Mary’s family raised all the chicken, pork and beef they ate. They made their own butter, canned all their vegetables and fruit to last throughout the year. To say they were great cooks and bakers is an understatement.
School for women was not a priority at that time. I think she only finished through the 8th grade. Even though they weren’t school smart they were geniuses in other ways. Girls and women worked on the farm to support the family and take care of the house. They were amazing workers and amazing cooks and were the nicest, sweetest most giving people I’ve ever met.
When Aunt Mary and Uncle John passed away they left 2 large cook books that compiled all their delicious and decadent recipes over the years. Some were passed down through generations and some were given to them by family and friends. Those cook books are like gold to me. I scanned and printed each page. My mom scanned and saved each delicate, sometimes hand written pages, to a flash drive so they would be forever saved and remembered.
Aunt Mary has a niece on her side of the family who lives in Virginia. When my aunt passed away, those cook books were all she asked for. So after scanning each page my mom sent them to her. All our families knew how strong their passion to bake and cook was. Sharing their recipes with all of the world, through Desserts by Juliette, is our way of making their memories last forever. I know my Aunt Mary and Uncle John would like nothing better than to spread joy and happiness with their recipes to all of you.

So what’s a streusel you ask?
Some people aren’t quite sure so I’ve copied the Wikipedia definition below:
Wikipedia Definition of Streusel: in baking and pastry making, streusel is a crumbly topping of flour, butter, and sugar that is baked on top of muffins, breads, pies, and cakes. … The term is also sometimes used for rich pastries topped with, or mixed with, streusel.
The streusel added to this Cherry Streusel Coffee Cake is the definite “cherry on top” to make this recipe one to be share with anyone and everyone. I haven’t found a single person who doesn’t like this one!
My favorite way to eat this dessert is hot right out of the oven. As you see from the picture below it doesn’t really hold the squared off Coffee Cake presentation but the steamy hot goodness was more than I could wait for, lol.
